  • Antarctica is one of the rare places where there is no human influence. It has a very unique mix of flora and fauna. But if Antarctica doesn't have any human influence, who owns it? And if no one country owns it, then are we wasting the potential of Antarctica in the name of geopolitics? Watch this video to find out as Dhruv Rathee explains to you the geopolitics of Antarctica.

Hey Dhruv, I visited Antarctica as an environmental scientist during the 38th and 41st Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica. I was deputed at Maitri station for 3 months in each expedition and performed research works relevant to EIA. It was a great experience working at sub-zero temperature and understanding the frozen continent. Your compilation about the continent 7 was commendable. Keep it up!

Antarctica is governed internationally through the Antarctic Treaty system.
The Antarctic Treaty was signed in 1959 by 12 countries who had scientists in and around Antarctica at the time. The negotiation of the Treaty stemmed from the very successful 1957-58 International Geophysical Year.

Thank you so much for this video. I always had curiosity about Antarctica from childhood, now I got to know something more about the continent. Antarctica is really important for this Earth we live in, so it should be left untouched. Maybe a little bit of exploration but no exploitation. Though, I highly doubt USA that they don't have some kind of twisted plan regarding Antarctica, we just don't know it yet.

there were many sea voyagers in past even some 100 years ago who claimed to go beyond antarctica, earth maps were different 100-200 years ago, they had shown land and oceans beyond antarctica. were they fools to make those types maps. i know in india nobody questions because we know everything but for your own awakening start questioning age old notions.

I've been to Antarctica in March 2022 on a climate change expedition and I've seen the changes in climate happening.
There is absolutely no question that this Treaty should be protected and made more extensive.
The oceans surrounding Antarctica should also be protected to avoid fishing.
Important thing that everyone should know- Krills is an organism found in Antarctica and is crucial for the entire food web of Antarctica. Now products like Omega 3 tablets use Krill oil by exploiting the oceans around Antarctica in the name of better nutrition. We are all connected to Antarctica and climate change in Antarctica will affect all of us.
I hope that you make better lifestyle/product choices to preserve the last wilderness on Earth-The Antarctica!

Dhruv sir, I am 10 years old and have a dream of making a country over the territories of Antarctica, but after I saw this video, I am very sad because of the treaty and its rules and regulations because they are entirely against my idea. I wanted to make my country an absolute (or constitutional) monarchy. But if the treaty will renew in 2048, that would end my dreams. Please Reply.

land, seas and area beyond antarctica.
there were many sea voyagers in past even some 100 years ago who claimed to go beyond antarctica, earth maps were different 100-200 years ago, they had shown land and oceans beyond antarctica. were they fools to make those types maps. i know in india nobody questions because we know everything but for your own awakening start questioning age old notions.

Hey Dhruv! Unlike what you have stated, India's first research station in Antarctica, Dakshin Gangotri was decommissioned on 5th February, 1990 and was subsequently turned into a supply base. Also, India is of the few nations to have established a research station in Antarctica after 2000 (in 2012) and named it Bharat (India's third). It is one of the two currently functional research stations of India in Antarctica along with Maitri. :)
